Mondays in New Orleans is known for the tradition of Red Beans and Rice. In the past, it was the original wash day of the week. Since the meal did not require much attention, women of the house would put on a pot of red beans to cook all day while they tended to laundry. The beans were seasoned with the leftover hambone from the previous night’s dinner. Red Beans and Rice still appear on most menus and in many homes every Monday. Whether it is from your mama’s house, your kitchen or from a famed New Orleans chef, it is still a local favorite.
